Fire Department #
1 |
In the early days of cities, most fire
departments were volunteers, and Elgin was no exception. Obviously, the
need for fire departments predates the existence of automobiles or trucks,
hence, the team of Fire Department # 1 arrived at the scene in a wagon
pulled by a team of horses.
Located adjacent to city hall, Fire Department
# 1 was built in 1889. This building would serve as one of the cities fire
stations (sustaining regular improvements) until 1968. When the new fire
station was built in the municipal building, this structure was torn down to
build a parking lot.
