In
August of 1905, The Elgin National Watch Factory completed the 144 foot clock tower,
which would serve as their symbol of elegance and dignity for many years. The Seth Thomas
Clock that resided in their clock tower had a gravity escapement and was
regulated by a pendulum that was fourteen feet long. The weights on the
bottom of the pendulum weighed 330 pounds.
This
clock was the first self-winding clock to ever be put into operation. The
four dials on the clock were 14 1/2 feet in diameter and the minute hands were
more than seven feet long. The clock could be easily be read at night even
at distances of a half a mile away.
