Public parks in Elgin date back as far as 1884. From Gifford Park, which was originally called The Public Square, to Lord’s Park, which was originally a dairy farm, Elgin is certainly replete with leisure time areas.
The parks in Elgin have many "firsts" including Wing Park, which is
the site of the first municipal 9 hole golf course in the State of Illinois.
Some have more enigmatic backgrounds like Trout Park, for being the site of both glacial vegetation
as well as a (man-made, of course) roller coaster. These pages should provide you with a
brief glimpse of where Elginites spent some of their spare time.
